spent 30 years in the art creating innovative programs and projects throughout the world. His expertise ranges from as a writer, performer, director, educator and administrator. He has worked extensively in professional and community arts. In the early ‘70’s he was a founding member of both the Iowa Theater Lab & Berkeley’s Blake Street Hawkeyes. In his fifteen years in the SF Bay Area he created works with Whoopi Goldberg, John O'Keefe, George Coates, Guillermo Gomez-Pena & others. With Jim Nisbet he produced 5 Actualist Conventions in the Bay Area, large art festivals involving over forty performances per day. He was the author, and producer of the award winning “TOKENS: A Play on the Plague” an opera with a cast of 60 that was performed at Theater Artaud in San Francisco. He has performed his solo plays throughout North America and Europe and his “Out Comes Butch,” has been produced by many venues, including the Guthrie Theater of Minneapolis. He was the original director & contributing writer to "Whoopi Goldberg on Broadway.” He has served as adjunct faculty at Second City, Chicago and the Naropa Institute. In 1991 he became the Artistic Director of Free Street Theater in Chicago and, in 1996, Free Street’s Executive Director. At Free Street he designed and administered programs that linked theater and creative writing to the advancement of literacy of low-income Chicago youth and teens. In 2001 Schein developed the Awassa AIDS EDUCATION CIRCUS with street children in Awassa, Ethiopia, and has made six tours to Africa, directing the CIRCUS in market place performances throughout the Rift Valley and co-founding two NGOs in Ethiopia that have grown up around the CIRCUS. In August 2003 Schein became the Executive Director of the Arts Council of Chautauqua County in Jamestown New York and the Reg Lenna Civic Center, a 1250 seat restored movie theater in Jamestown. In Jamestown he has administered the extensive educational programs of the Arts Council, created a Public Arts Program and Arts Services Program, conducted a capital campaign to create an “Arts Block”, developed a studio program, and produced countless shows and events at the Reg Lenna Theatre.
