MYethiOPIA pivots on an

event that happened when Schein

developed the Awassa AIDS

Education Circus with a troupe

of Ethiopian street kids; the

performers were nearly trampled

to death by an over enthusiastic

audience and a “condom riot” ensued in the Awassa market.

The show probes Schein’s own conflicts bringing ‘culture’

to one of the oldest cultures in the the world, and exposes the quasi-colonial folly of making art in

a ‘developing’ country – where the the cost of Schein’s shoes could pay for three month’s food for a family.

"Surreal, funny and heart-wrenching" - Judith Marcuse, Director, International Centre for Art and Social Change

“Out Comes Butch,” grew out of a series of improvisations that Schein originally performed in Berkeley, CA. Schein toured “Butch” to London and Glasgow with Whoopi Goldberg and also to Amsterdam, Calgary, New York City and many other venues in the US and Canada. “Out Comes Butch” was published in West Coast Plays and has been produced by various theaters in the USA with performers other than Schein, including the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, and most recently, in 2008, by the Voodoo Lounge in New Orleans and The Box Theatre in Santa Fe.  1 Hr.

Infarcation (25 minutes)

channels the voices Schein heard when he had a cardiac incident and woke up in the emergency ward wondering where he’d been when he was “out." "Infarcation” was presented as a choral work for five voices at Links Hall in Chicago and has been performed as a reading by Schein. It premiered as a solo theater piece in Jan. 2010.
